1. The Beginning of the Ecclesiastical Year. On this day
commemoration is made of: Our holy father Symeon the Stylite.
The
reading is from the First Epistle of St. Paul to Timothy.
My
child Timothy, I exhort that first of all, supplications, prayers,
intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; For kings, and
for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life
in all godliness and honesty. For this is good and acceptable in the sight
of God our Saviour; Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto
the knowledge of the truth. For there is one God, and one mediator between
God and men, the man Christ Jesus; Who gave himself a ransom for all, to
be testified in due time. Whereunto I am ordained a preacher, and an
apostle, (I speak the truth in Christ, and lie not;) a teacher of the
Gentiles in faith and verity.
Another for St. Symeon the Stylite.
Prokhimenon.
Tone 7 ( Psalm 115) benefits toward us?
The
reading is from the Epistle of St. Paul to the Colossians. Brethren, put on, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering; Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye. And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness. And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.

2. On this day commemoration is made of: The holy martyr
Mamas; St. John the Faster, Patriarch of Constantinople.
The
reading is from the Epistle of St. Paul to the Romans.
Brethren,
we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to
them who are the called according to his purpose. For whom he did
foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his
Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren. Moreover whom he
did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also
justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified. What shall we
then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us? He that
spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not
with him also freely give us all things? Who shall lay any thing to the
charge of God's elect? It is God that justifieth. Who is he that
condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who
is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us. Who
shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress,
or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? As it is
written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as
sheep for the slaughter. Nay, in all these things we are more than
conquerors through him that loved us. For I am persuaded, that neither
death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things
present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other
creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in
Christ Jesus our Lord.

Another for
St. John the Faster. Brethren, such an high priest became us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and made higher than the heavens; Who needeth not daily, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifice, first for his own sins, and then for the people's: for this he did once, when he offered up himself. For the law maketh men high priests which have infirmity; but the word of the oath, which was since the law, maketh the Son, who is consecrated for evermore. Now of the things which we have spoken this is the sum: We have such an high priest, who is set on the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens; A minister of the sanctuary, and of the true tabernacle, which the Lord pitched, and not man.
3. On this day commemoration is made of: The holy Hieromartyr Anthimus, Bishop of Nicomedia; St. Theoctistus, fellow ascetic of St. Euthymius the Great.
Prokhimenon.
Tone 7 ( Psalm 115) toward us?
The
reading is from the Epistle of St. Paul to the Hebrews.
Brethren,
remember them which have the rule over you, who have spoken unto you the
word of God: whose faith follow, considering the end of their
conversation. Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.
Be not carried about with divers and strange doctrines. For it is a good
thing that the heart be established with grace; not with meats, which have
not profited them that have been occupied therein. We have an altar,
whereof they have no right to eat which serve the tabernacle. For the
bodies of those beasts, whose blood is brought into the sanctuary by the
high priest for sin, are burned without the camp. Wherefore Jesus also,
that he might sanctify the people with his own blood, suffered without the
gate. Let us go forth therefore unto him without the camp, bearing his
reproach. For here have we no continuing city, but we seek one to come. By
him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually,
that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to his name. But to do good
and to communicate forget not: for with such sacrifices God is well
pleased.
saints shout for joy.
Another for St. Theoctistus.
My
child Timothy, be not thou ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me
his prisoner: but be thou partaker of the afflictions of the gospel
according to the power of God; Who hath saved us, and called us with an
holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose
and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began, But
is now made manifest by the appearing of our Saviour Jesus Christ, who
hath abolished death, and hath brought life and immortality to light
through the gospel: Whereunto I am appointed a preacher, and an apostle,
and a teacher of the Gentiles. For the which cause I also suffer these
things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed,
and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto
him against that day. Hold fast the form of sound words, which thou hast
heard of me, in faith and love which is in Christ Jesus. That good thing
which was committed unto thee keep by the Holy Ghost which dwelleth in us.
This thou knowest, that all they which are in Asia be turned away from me;
of whom are Phygellus and Hermogenes. The Lord give mercy unto the house
of Onesiphorus; for he oft refreshed me, and was not ashamed of my chain:
But, when he was in Rome, he sought me out very diligently, and found me.
The Lord grant unto him that he may find mercy of the Lord in that day:
and in how many things he ministered unto me at Ephesus, thou knowest very
well.
4. On this day commemoration is made of: The holy Hieromartyr Babylas Bishop of Antioch and the Three Children who suffered with him [Cegourus, Sekendinus, Sekendus]; The holy
Prophet Moses.
The
reading is from the Epistle of St. Paul to the Hebrews. Brethren, all the saints through faith subdued kingdoms, wrought righteousness, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions. Quenched the violence of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, out of weakness were made strong, waxed valiant in fight, turned to flight the armies of the aliens. Women received their dead raised to life again: and others were tortured, not accepting deliverance; that they might obtain a better resurrection: And others had trial of cruel mockings and scourgings, yea, moreover of bonds and imprisonment: They were stoned, they were sawn asunder, were tempted, were slain with the sword: they wandered about in sheepskins and goatskins; being destitute, afflicted, tormented; (Of whom the world was not worthy:) they wandered in deserts, and in mountains, and in dens and caves of the earth. And these all, having obtained a good report through faith, received not the promise: God having provided some better thing for us, that they without us should not be made perfect. Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith.

5. On this day commemoration is made of: The Holy Prophet Zacharias, father of St. John the Baptist.

Tone 7. [Psalm 63].
The
reading is from the Epistle of St. Paul to the Hebrews.
Brethren,
when God made promise to Abraham, because he could swear by no greater, he
sware by himself, Saying, Surely blessing I will bless thee, and
multiplying I will multiply thee. And so, after he had patiently endured,
he obtained the promise. For men verily swear by the greater: and an oath
for confirmation is to them an end of all strife. Wherein God, willing
more abundantly to shew unto the heirs of promise the immutability of his
counsel, confirmed it by an oath: That by two immutable things, in which
it was impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation, who
have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us: Which hope
we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast, and which
entereth into that within the veil; Whither the forerunner is for us
entered, even Jesus, made an high priest for ever after the order of
Melchisedec.

6. On this day commemoration is made of: The miracle of the
Archangel Michael at Chonae. great.
The
reading is from the Epistle of St. Paul to the Hebrews.
Brethren,
if the word spoken by angels was stedfast, and every transgression and
disobedience received a just recompence of reward; How shall we escape, if
we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by
the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him; God also
bearing them witness, both with signs and wonders, and with divers
miracles, and gifts of the Holy Ghost, according to his own will? For unto
the angels hath he not put in subjection the world to come, whereof we
speak. But one in a certain place testified, saying, What is man, that
thou art mindful of him? or the son of man that thou visitest him? Thou
madest him a little lower than the angels; thou crownedst him with glory
and honour, and didst set him over the works of thy hands: Thou hast put
all things in subjection under his feet. For in that he put all in
subjection under him, he left nothing that is not put under him. But now
we see not yet all things put under him. But we see Jesus, who was made a
little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with
glory and honour; that he by the grace of God should taste death for every
man. For it became him, for whom are all things, and by whom are all
things, in bringing many sons unto glory, to make the captain of their
salvation perfect through sufferings.
7. On this day commemoration is made of: The holy Martyr Sozon the Shepherd.
The
reading is from the Epistle of St. Paul to the Romans. Romans 6:18-23 Brethren, being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness. I speak after the manner of men because of the infirmity of your flesh: for as ye have yielded your members servants to uncleanness and to iniquity unto iniquity; even so now yield your members servants to righteousness unto holiness. For when ye were the servants of sin, ye were free from righteousness. What fruit had ye then in those things whereof ye are now ashamed? for the end of those things is death. But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life. For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
8. On this day commemoration is made of: The Nativity of the
Most Holy Mother of God and Ever-Virgin Mary.
rejoiced in God my Saviour.
The
reading is from the Epistle of St. Paul to the Philippians.
Brethren,
let this mind be in you, which was
also in Christ Jesus: Who, being in the form of God, thought it not
robbery to be equal with God: But made himself of no reputation, and took
upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: And
being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient
unto death, even the death of the cross. Wherefore God also hath highly
exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: That at the
name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in
earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess
that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
9. On this day commemoration is made of: The Righteous
Progenitors Joachim and Anna.
The
reading is from the Epistle of St. Paul to the Galations
Brethren,
Abraham had two sons, the one by a
bondmaid, the other by a freewoman. But he who was of the bondwoman was
born after the flesh; but he of the freewoman was by promise. Which things
are an allegory: for these are the two covenants; the one from the mount
Sinai, which gendereth to bondage, which is Agar. For this Agar is mount
Sinai in Arabia, and answereth to Jerusalem which now is, and is in
bondage with her children. But Jerusalem which is above is free, which is
the mother of us all. For it is written, Rejoice, thou barren that bearest
not; break forth and cry, thou that travailest not: for the desolate hath
many more children than she which hath an husband. all the Lord will deliver them.
13. On this day commemoration is made of: The Consecration
of the Church of the
Resurrection of Christ.
The
reading is from the Epistle of St. Paul to the Hebrews.
Holy
brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High
Priest of our profession, Christ Jesus; Who was faithful to him that
appointed him, as also Moses was faithful in all his house. For this man
was counted worthy of more glory than Moses, inasmuch as he who hath
builded the house hath more honour than the house. For every house is
builded by some man; but he that built all things is God.

Brethren,
we speak wisdom among them that are perfect: yet not the wisdom of this
world, nor of the princes of this world, that come to nought: But we speak
the wisdom of God in a mystery, even the hidden wisdom, which God ordained
before the world unto our glory: Which none of the princes of this world
knew: for had they known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of
glory. But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither
have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for
them that love him.

Tone 6. [Psalm 27].
The
reading is from the Epistle of St. Paul to the Galatians. Brethren, Ye see how large a letter I have written unto you with mine own hand. As many as desire to make a fair shew in the flesh, they constrain you to be circumcised; only lest they should suffer persecution for the cross of Christ. For neither they themselves who are circumcised keep the law; but desire to have you circumcised, that they may glory in your flesh. But God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world. For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision, but a new creature. And as many as walk according to this rule, peace be on them, and mercy, and upon the Israel of God. From henceforth let no man trouble me: for I bear in my body the marks of the Lord Jesus. Brethren, the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit. Amen.

The
reading is from the First Epistle of St. Paul to the Corinthians. Brethren, the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God. For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and will bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent. Where is the wise? where is the scribe? where is the disputer of this world? hath not God made foolish the wisdom of this world? For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe. For the Jews require a sign, and the Greeks seek after wisdom: But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumblingblock, and unto the Greeks foolishness; But unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God.

Tone 7. [Psalm 63].
The reading is from the Epistle of St. Paul to the Colossians. Brethren, now I rejoice in my sufferings for you, and fill up that which is behind of the afflictions of Christ in my flesh for his body's sake, which is the church: Whereof I am made a minister, according to the dispensation of God which is given to me for you, to fulfil the word of God; Even the mystery which hath been hid from ages and from generations, but now is made manifest to his saints: To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory: Whom we preach, warning every man, and teaching every man in all wisdom; that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus: Whereunto I also labour, striving according to his working, which worketh in me mightily. For I would that ye knew what great conflict I have for you.
Saturday after the Exaltation of the Cross Prokhimenon. Tone 6. [Psalm 31]. Verse: Be glad in the Lord, and rejoice, ye righteous. Verse: Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven.
The reading is from the First Epistle of St. Paul to the Corinthians. Brethren, ye see your calling, how that not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called: But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty; And base things of the world, and things which are despised, hath God chosen, yea, and things which are not, to bring to nought things that are: That no flesh should glory in his presence. But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption: That, according as it is written, He that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord. And I, brethren, when I came to you, came not with excellency of speech or of wisdom, declaring unto you the testimony of God. For I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified. And I was with you in weakness, and in fear, and in much trembling. And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man's wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power: That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.
Sunday after the Exaltation of the Cross Prokhimenon and Alleluia in the Tone of the Week
The
reading is from the Epistle of St. Paul to the Galatians. Brethren, knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified. But if, while we seek to be justified by Christ, we ourselves also are found sinners, is therefore Christ the minister of sin? God forbid. For if I build again the things which I destroyed, I make myself a transgressor. For I through the law am dead to the law, that I might live unto God. I am crucified with Christ: neverthless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.
16. On this day commemoration is made of: The holy Greatmartyr Euphemia.
Prokhimenon.
Tone 8. [Psalm 67]
The reading is from the Second Epistle of St. Paul to the Corinthians. Brethren, as workers together with God, we beseech you also that ye receive not the grace of God in vain. (For he saith, I have heard thee in a time accepted, and in the day of salvation have I succoured thee: behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.) Giving no offence in any thing, that the ministry be not blamed: But in all things approving ourselves as the ministers of God, in much patience, in afflictions, in necessities, in distresses, In stripes, in imprisonments, in tumults, in labours, in watchings, in fastings; By pureness, by knowledge, by longsuffering, by kindness, by the Holy Ghost, by love unfeigned, By the word of truth, by the power of God, by the armour of righteousness on the right hand and on the left, By honour and dishonour, by evil report and good report: as deceivers, and yet true; As unknown, and yet well known; as dying, and, behold, we live; as chastened, and not killed; As sorrowful, yet alway rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, and yet possessing all things.

The reading is from the Epistle of St. Paul to the Ephesians. Brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution. But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived. The reading is from the First General Epistle of St. John. 1 John 4:12-19 No man hath seen God at any time. If we love one another, God dwelleth in us, and his love is perfected in us. Hereby know we that we dwell in him, and he in us, because he hath given us of his Spirit. And we have seen and do testify that the Father sent the Son to be the Saviour of the world. Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God dwelleth in him, and he in God. And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him. Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment: because as he is, so are we in this world. There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love. We love him, because he first loved us.
Alleluia [3]. Tone 1 [Psalm 88]. Verse: The heavens shall declare Thy wonders, O Lord. Verse: God is glorified in the assembly of the saints.
27. On this day commemoration is made of: The Holy Marty Callistratus.
The reading is from the Epistle of St. Paul to the Ephesians. Brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. 28. On this day commemoration is made of: Our Holy father Chariton the Confessor.
Prokhimenon.
Tone 7. [Psalm 149]
The reading is from the Second Epistle of St. Paul to the Corinthians. Brethren, God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us. We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; Persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed; Always bearing about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our body. For we which live are alway delivered unto death for Jesus' sake, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our mortal flesh. So then death worketh in us, but life in you. We having the same spirit of faith, according as it is written, I believed, and therefore have I spoken; we also believe, and therefore speak; Knowing that he which raised up the Lord Jesus shall raise up us also by Jesus, and shall present us with you. For all things are for your sakes, that the abundant grace might through the thanksgiving of many redound to the glory of God.
Alleluia [3]. Tone 6 [Psalm 111]. Verse: Blessded is the man that feareth the Lord. Verse: His righteousness endureth for ever.

Brethren, the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. Let us not be desirous of vain glory, provoking one another, envying one another. Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted. Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.
Alleluia [3]. Tone 6 [Psalm 111]. Verse: Blessded is the man that feareth the Lord. Verse: His righteousness endureth for ever.
30. On this day commemoration is made of: The Holy Hieromartyr Gregorius, Bishop of Great Armenia
Prokhimenon.
Tone 7 ( Psalm 115) toward us?
The reading is from the First Epistle of St. Paul to the Corinthians.
Brethren,
watch ye, stand fast in the faith, quit you like men, be strong. Let all
your things be done with charity. I beseech you, brethren, (ye know the
house of Stephanas, that it is the firstfruits of Achaia, and that they
have addicted themselves to the ministry of the saints,) That ye submit
yourselves unto such, and to every one that helpeth with us, and laboureth.
I am glad of the coming of Stephanas and Fortunatus and Achaicus: for that
which was lacking on your part they have supplied. For they have refreshed
my spirit and your's: therefore acknowledge ye them that are such. The
churches of Asia salute you. Aquila and Priscilla salute you much in the
Lord, with the church that is in their house. All the brethren greet you.
Greet ye one another with an holy kiss. The salutation of me Paul with
mine own hand. If any man love not the Lord Jesus Christ, let him be
Anathema Maranatha. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. My
love be with you all in Christ Jesus. Amen.
Alleluia
[3]. Tone 2 [Psalm
