The Month of January

1. On this day commemoration is made of: The Circumcision

according to the flesh of our Lord Jesus Christ; St. Basil

        the Great.

Prokhimenon. Tone 1. [Psalm 48]
Verse:
My mouth shall speak of wisdom: and the meditation of

my heart shall be of understanding.
Verse:
Hear this, all ye people.

The reading is from the Epistle of St. Paul to the Colossians.

Colossians 2:8-12

Brethren, beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ. For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily. And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power: In whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ: Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead.

Alleluia [3].  Tone 8 [Psalm 79, 36].

Verse: Give ear, O Shepherd of Israel.

Verse: The mouth of the righteous speaketh wisdom.

2. On this day commemoration is made of:  St. Sylvester,

Pope of Rome; Our holy father Seraphim of Sarov.

Prokhimenon. Tone 7 ( Psalm 115)
Verse:
Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of his saints.
Verse:
What shall we render unto the LORD for all his

          benefits toward us?

The reading is from the Epistle of St. Paul to the Hebrews.

Hebrews 5:4-10

Brethren, no man taketh this honour unto himself, but he that is called of God, as was Aaron. So also Christ glorified not himself to be made an high priest; but he that said unto him, Thou art my Son, to day have I begotten thee. As he saith also in another place, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec. Who in the days of his flesh, when he had offered up prayers and supplications with strong crying and tears unto him that was able to save him from death, and was heard in that he feared; Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered; And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him; Called of God an high priest after the order of Melchisedec.

4. On this day commemoration is made of: The Assembly of the

         Seventy Apostles.

The reading is from the First Epistle of St. Paul to the Corinthians.
1 Corinthians 4:9-16

Brethren, God hath set forth us the apostles last, as it were appointed to death: for we are made a spectacle unto the world, and to angels, and to men. We are fools for Christ's sake, but ye are wise in Christ; we are weak, but ye are strong; ye are honourable, but we are despised. Even unto this present hour we both hunger, and thirst, and are naked, and are buffeted, and have no certain dwellingplace; And labour, working with our own hands: being reviled, we bless; being persecuted, we suffer it: Being defamed, we intreat: we are made as the filth of the world, and are the offscouring of all things unto this day. I write not these things to shame you, but as my beloved sons I warn you. For though ye have ten thousand instructers in Christ, yet have ye not many fathers: for in Christ Jesus I have begotten you through the gospel. Wherefore I beseech you, be ye followers of me.

5. The Eve of Theophany

Apostle readings for the Royal Hours

 on the Eve of Theophany

First Hour

The Reading is from the Acts of the Apostles

Acts of the Apostles 13:25-32

In those days, as John fulfilled his course, he said, Whom think ye that I am? I am not he. But, behold, there cometh one after me, whose shoes of his feet I am not worthy to loose. Men and brethren, children of the stock of Abraham, and whosoever among you feareth God, to you is the word of this salvation sent. For they that dwell at Jerusalem, and their rulers, because they knew him not, nor yet the voices of the prophets which are read every sabbath day, they have fulfilled them in condemning him. And though they found no cause of death in him, yet desired they Pilate that he should be slain. And when they had fulfilled all that was written of him, they took him down from the tree, and laid him in a sepulchre. But God raised him from the dead: And he was seen many days of them which came up with him from Galilee to Jerusalem, who are his witnesses unto the people. And we declare unto you glad tidings, how that the promise which was made unto the fathers, God hath fulfilled the same unto us their children, in that he hath raised up Jesus again.

Third Hour

The Reading is from the Acts of the Apostles.

Acts 19:1-8

In those days, it came to pass, that, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul having passed through the upper coasts came to Ephesus: and finding certain disciples, He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost. And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John's baptism. Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus. When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied. And all the men were about twelve. And he went into the synagogue, and spake boldly for the space of three months, disputing and persuading the things concerning the kingdom of God.

Sixth Hour

The reading is from the Epistle of St. Paul to the Romans.
Romans 6:3-11

Brethren, as many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection: Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. For he that is dead is freed from sin. Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him: Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him. For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God. Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Ninth Hour

The reading is from the Epistle of St. Paul to Titus.

Titus 2:11-14, 3:4-7

My child Titus, the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world; Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ; Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works. But after that the kindness and love of God our Saviour toward man appeared, Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost; Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour; That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.

At the Divine Liturgy of Vespers

Prokhimenon. Tone 3 ( Psalm 26)
Verse:
The Lord is my light and my Saviour.
Verse:
The Lord is the defender of my life.

The reading is from the First Epistle of St. Paul to the Corinthians.

1 Corinthians 9:19-27

Brethren,  though I be free from all men, yet have I made myself servant unto all, that I might gain the more. And unto the Jews I became as a Jew, that I might gain the Jews; to them that are under the law, as under the law, that I might gain them that are under the law; To them that are without law, as without law, (being not without law to God, but under the law to Christ,) that I might gain them that are without law. To the weak became I as weak, that I might gain the weak: I am made all things to all men, that I might by all means save some. And this I do for the gospel's sake, that I might be partaker thereof with you. Know ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize? So run, that ye may obtain. And every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown; but we an incorruptible. I therefore so run, not as uncertainly; so fight I, not as one that beateth the air: But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway.

Alleluia [3].  Tone 6 [Psalm 44].

Verse:  My heart is inditing a good matter.

Verse: Thou art fairer than the children of men.

At the Great Sanctification of the Waters

Prokhimenon. Tone 3 ( Psalm 26)
Verse:
The Lord is my light and my Saviour.
Verse:
The Lord is the defender of my life.

The reading is from the First Epistle of St. Paul to the Corinthians.

1 Corinthians 10:1-4

Brethren, I would not that ye should be ignorant, how that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea; And were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea; And did all eat the same spiritual meat; And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ.

Alleluia [3].  Tone 6 [Psalm 44].

Verse:  My heart is inditing a good matter.

Verse: Thou art fairer than the children of men.

6. The Holy Theophany of our Lord and God and Saviour Jesus

Judah was his sanctuary.
      By the prayers...

Verse:
He hath inclined his ear unto me, therefore will I call

upon him as long as I live.
Save us, O Son of God...
Verse:
The sorrows of death compassed me, and the dangers of

          hell took hold of me.

The Third Antiphon Tone 5 [Psalm 117].

Verse: O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good: because his

          mercy endureth for ever.

When Thou, O Lord, wast baptized in the Jordan, the

worship of the Trinity was made manifest. For the voice of

the Father bore witness unto Thee, calling Thee the beloved

Son, and the Spirit in the form of a dove confirmed His word

as sure and steadfast. O Christ our God who hast appeared

and enlightened the world, glory to Thee.

7. On this day commemoration is made of: The Glorious Prophet

       and Forerunner John the Baptist.

Prokhimenon. Tone 7. [Psalm 63].
Verse:
The righteous shall be glad in the Lord.
Verse:
Hear my voice, O God.

And all the men were about twelve. And he went into the synagogue, and spake boldly for the space of three months, disputing and persuading the things concerning the kingdom of God.

Alleluia [3]. Tone 2 [Psalm 91].
Verse:
The righteous shall flourish like the palm tree: he shall

grow like a cedar in Lebanon.
Verse:
Those that be planted in the house of the Lord shall

flourish in the courts of our God.

9. On this day commemoration is made of: The holy Martyr

        Polyeuctus.

Prokhimenon. Tone 4. [Psalm 67]
Verse:
God is wonderful in His saints.

Verse: Bless ye God in the congregations.

The reading is from the Second Epistle of St. Paul to Timothy

2 Timothy 2:1-10

My child Timothy, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also. Thou therefore endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ. No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier. And if a man also strive for masteries, yet is he not crowned, except he strive lawfully. The husbandman that laboureth must be first partaker of the fruits. Consider what I say; and the Lord give thee understanding in all things. Remember that Jesus Christ of the seed of David was raised from the dead according to my gospel: Wherein I suffer trouble, as an evil doer, even unto bonds; but the word of God is not bound. Therefore I endure all things for the elect's sakes, that they may also obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory.

Alleluia [3]. Tone 4 [Psalm 43, 33].
Verse:
O God, we have heard with our ears.
Verse:
The righteous cry, and the LORD heareth.

10. On this day commemoration is made of: St. Gregory,

           Bishop of Nyssa.

The reading is from the Epistle of St. Paul to the Ephesians.

Ephesians 4:7-13

Brethren, unto every one of us is given grace according to the measure of the gift of Christ. Wherefore he saith, When he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men. (Now that he ascended, what is it but that he also descended first into the lower parts of the earth? He that descended is the same also that ascended up far above all heavens, that he might fill all things.) And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ.

11. On this day commemoration is made of: Our holy father

         Theodosius the Cenobiarch.

Prokhimenon. Tone 7 ( Psalm 115)
Verse:
Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of his saints.
Verse:
What shall we render unto the LORD for all his

          benefits toward us?

The reading is from the Epistle of St. Paul to the Hebrews.

Hebrews 13:7-16

Brethren, Remember them which have the rule over you, who have spoken unto you the word of God: whose faith follow, considering the end of their conversation. Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever. Be not carried about with divers and strange doctrines. For it is a good thing that the heart be established with grace; not with meats, which have not profited them that have been occupied therein. We have an altar, whereof they have no right to eat which serve the tabernacle. For the bodies of those beasts, whose blood is brought into the sanctuary by the high priest for sin, are burned without the camp. Wherefore Jesus also, that he might sanctify the people with his own blood, suffered without the gate. Let us go forth therefore unto him without the camp, bearing his reproach. For here have we no continuing city, but we seek one to come. By him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to his name. But to do good and to communicate forget not: for with such sacrifices God is well pleased.

Alleluia [3].  Tone 1 [Psalm 111].

Verse: Blessed is the man that feareth the Lord.

Verse: His righteousness endureth for ever.

Saturday after Theophany

Prokhimenon. Tone 7 ( Psalm 115)
Verse:
Be glad in the LORD, and rejoice, ye righteous.
Verse:
Blessed is they whose transgressions are forgiven.

The reading is from the Epistle of St. Paul to the Ephesians.
Ephesians 6:10-17

Brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

Alleluia [3].  Tone 6 [Psalm 64, 101].

Verse: Blessed are they whom Thou choosest, and causest to

          approach unto Thee.

Verse: And their remembrance from generation to generation.

 Sunday after Theophany

Prokhimenon. Tone 1. [Psalm 32]

Verse: Let thy mercy, O Lord, be upon us.

Verse: Rejoice in the Lord, O ye righteous.

Alleluia [3].  Tone 5 [Psalm 88].

Verse: I will sing of Thy mercies, O Lord, for ever.

Verse: For Thou hast said, Mercy shall be built up for ever.

14. On this day commemoration is made of: Our holy

fathers, the Martyrs of Sinai and Raithu.

The reading is from the Epistle of St. Paul to the Hebrews.

Hebrews 10:32-38

Brethren, call to remembrance the former days, in which, after ye were illuminated, ye endured a great fight of afflictions; Partly, whilst ye were made a gazing stock both by reproaches and afflictions; and partly, whilst ye became companions of them that were so used. For ye had compassion of me in my bonds, and took joyfully the spoiling of your goods, knowing in yourselves that ye have in heaven a better and an enduring substance. Cast not away therefore your confidence, which hath great recompence of reward. For ye have need of patience, that, after ye have done the will of God, ye might receive the promise. For yet a little while, and he that shall come will come, and will not tarry. Now the just shall live by faith.

15. On this day commemoration is made of: Paul of Thebes and

           John Kalyvites.

The reading is from the Epistle of St. Paul to the Galatians.
Galatians 5:22-6:2

Brethren, the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. Let us not be desirous of vain glory, provoking one another, envying one another. Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted. Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.

16. On this day commemoration is made of: The Veneration

of the Chains of the holy Apostle Peter.

Prokhimenon. Tone 8. [Psalm 18].

Verse: His voice is gone out into all the earth.

Verse: The heavens declare the glory of God.

The Reading is from the Acts of the Apostles.

Acts 12:1-11

Now about that time Herod the king stretched forth his hands to vex certain of the church. And he killed James the brother of John with the sword. And because he saw it pleased the Jews, he proceeded further to take Peter also. (Then were the days of unleavened bread.) And when he had apprehended him, he put him in prison, and delivered him to four quaternions of soldiers to keep him; intending after Easter to bring him forth to the people. Peter therefore was kept in prison: but prayer was made without ceasing of the church unto God for him. And when Herod would have brought him forth, the same night Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains: and the keepers before the door kept the prison. And, behold, the angel of the Lord came upon him, and a light shined in the prison: and he smote Peter on the side, and raised him up, saying, Arise up quickly. And his chains fell off from his hands. And the angel said unto him, Gird thyself, and bind on thy sandals. And so he did. And he saith unto him, Cast thy garment about thee, and follow me. And he went out, and followed him; and wist not that it was true which was done by the angel; but thought he saw a vision. When they were past the first and the second ward, they came unto the iron gate that leadeth unto the city; which opened to them of his own accord: and they went out, and passed on through one street; and forthwith the angel departed from him. And when Peter was come to himself, he said, Now I know of a surety, that the LORD hath sent his angel, and hath delivered me out of the hand of Herod, and from all the expectation of the people of the Jews.

17. On this day commemoration is made of: Our holy father

           Anthony the Great.

Prokhimenon. Tone 7 ( Psalm 115)
Verse:
Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of his saints.
Verse:
What shall we render unto the LORD for all his benefits

           toward us?

The reading is from the Epistle of St. Paul to the Hebrews.

Hebrews 13:17-21

Brethren, Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves: for they watch for your souls, as they that must give account, that they may do it with joy, and not with grief: for that is unprofitable for you. Pray for us: for we trust we have a good conscience, in all things willing to live honestly. But I beseech you the rather to do this, that I may be restored to you the sooner. Now the God of peace, that brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant, Make you perfect in every good work to do his will, working in you that which is wellpleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ; to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.

Alleluia [3].  Tone 1 [Psalm 111].

Verse: Blessed is the man that feareth the Lord.

Verse: His righteousness endureth for ever.

18. On this day commemoration is made of: Sts. Athanasius and

           Cyril, Patriarchs of Alexandria.

Prokhimenon: Tone 4. Song of the Three Children.
Verse:
Blessed art thou, O Lord God of our fathers.
Verse:
For thou art righteous in all the things that thou hast done

          to us.

The reading is from the Epistle of St. Paul to the Hebrews.

Verse:
O God, we have heard with our ears.
Verse:
The righteous cry, and the LORD heareth.

19. On this day commemoration is made of: Our holy

           father Macarius of Egypt.

20. On this day commemoration is made of: Our holy father

            Euthymius the Great.

 Prokhimenon. Tone 7. [Psalm 149]

 Verse:
Sing unto the Lord a new song.

The reading is from the Second Epistle of St. Paul to the Corinthians.
2 Corinthians 4:6-15

Brethren, God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us. We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; Persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed; Always bearing about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our body. For we which live are alway delivered unto death for Jesus' sake, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our mortal flesh. So then death worketh in us, but life in you. We having the same spirit of faith, according as it is written, I believed, and therefore have I spoken; we also believe, and therefore speak; Knowing that he which raised up the Lord Jesus shall raise up us also by Jesus, and shall present us with you. For all things are for your sakes, that the abundant grace might through the thanksgiving of many redound to the glory of God.

Alleluia [3].  Tone 1 [Psalm 111].

Verse: Blessed is the man that feareth the Lord.

Verse: He will  delight greatly in his commandments.

21. On this day commemoration is made of: Our holy father

Prokhimenon. Tone 7 ( Psalm 115)

Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of his saints.
Verse:
What shall we render unto the LORD for all his benefits

           toward us?

The reading is from the Epistle of St. Paul to the Philippians.
Philippians 1:12-20

Brethren, I would ye should understand that the things which happened unto me have fallen out rather unto the furtherance of the gospel; So that my bonds in Christ are manifest in all the palace, and in all other places; And many of the brethren in the Lord, waxing confident by my bonds, are much more bold to speak the word without fear. Some indeed preach Christ even of envy and strife; and some also of good will: The one preach Christ of contention, not sincerely, supposing to add affliction to my bonds: But the other of love, knowing that I am set for the defence of the gospel. What then? notwithstanding, every way, whether in pretence, or in truth, Christ is preached; and I therein do rejoice, yea, and will rejoice. For I know that this shall turn to my salvation through your prayer, and the supply of the Spirit of Jesus Christ, According to my earnest expectation and my hope.

22. On this day commemoration is made of: The holy Apostle

Timothy; The holy Martyr Anastasius the Persian.

Prokhimenon. Tone 8. [Psalm 18].

Verse: His voice is gone out into all the earth.

Verse: The heavens declare the glory of God.

2 Timothy 1:3-9

My child Timothy, I thank God, whom I serve from my forefathers with pure conscience, that without ceasing I have remembrance of thee in my prayers night and day; Greatly desiring to see thee, being mindful of thy tears, that I may be filled with joy; When I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and I am persuaded that in thee also. Wherefore I put thee in remembrance that thou stir up the gift of God, which is in thee by the putting on of my hands. For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind. Be not thou therefore ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me his prisoner: but be thou partaker of the afflictions of the gospel according to the power of God; Who hath saved us.

Alleluia [3].  Tone 1 [Psalm 88].

Verse: The heavens shall declare Thy wonders, O Lord.

Verse: God is glorified in the assembly of the saints.

          The holy Martyr Agathangelos.

The reading is from the Epistle of St. Paul to the Philippians.

Philippians 3:20-21, 4:1-3

Brethren, our conversation is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ: Who shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious body, according to the working whereby he is able even to subdue all things unto himself. Therefore, my brethren dearly beloved and longed for, my joy and crown, so stand fast in the Lord, my dearly beloved. I beseech Euodias, and beseech Syntyche, that they be of the same mind in the Lord. And I intreat thee also, true yokefellow, help those women which laboured with me in the gospel, with Clement also, and with other my fellowlabourers, whose names are in the book of life.

          heart shall be of understanding.
Verse:
Hear this, all ye people.

The reading is from the Epistle of St. Paul to the Hebrews.

Hebrews 7:26-8:2

Brethren, such an high priest became us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and made higher than the heavens; Who needeth not daily, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifice, first for his own sins, and then for the people's: for this he did once, when he offered up himself. For the law maketh men high priests which have infirmity; but the word of the oath, which was since the law, maketh the Son, who is consecrated for evermore. Now of the things which we have spoken this is the sum: We have such an high priest, who is set on the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens; A minister of the sanctuary, and of the true tabernacle, which the Lord pitched, and not man.

the Relics of the holy Hieromartyr Ignatius the Godbearer.

30. On this day commemoration is made of: The Three Great

Hierarchs, Basil the Great, Gregory the Theologian and John

Verse: The heavens declare the glory of God.

Tone 1 [Psalm 88].

Verse: The heavens shall declare Thy wonders, O Lord.

Verse: God is glorified in the assembly of the saints.

31. On this day commemoration is made of: The holy

Wonderworkers and Selfless Physicians Cyrus and John

Prokhimenon. Tone 4. [Psalm 15]

The saints that are in His land the Lord hath magnified.,
Verse:
I have set the LORD always before me.

The reading is from the First Epistle of St. Paul to the Corinthians.

1 Corinthians 12:27-13:8

Brethren, ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular. And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues. Are all apostles? are all prophets? are all teachers? are all workers of miracles? Have all the gifts of healing? do all speak with tongues? do all interpret? But covet earnestly the best gifts: and yet shew I unto you a more excellent way.Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal. And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing. And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing. Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil; Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth; Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things. Charity never faileth.

Alleluia [3].  Tone 1 [Psalm 132].

Verse: Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell

          together in unity!

Verse: For there the LORD commanded the blessing, even life for

          evermore.
