Question 50.

Father your blessing!
What is the difference between the terms Ιερουσαλήμ and Ιεροσόλυμα?

With respect,

Evangelos

Answer to Question 50.

Dear Evangelos,

The word Ιερουσαλήμ (Jerusalem) is a compound word meaning the holy city Ιερου – σαλήμ. The word Ιεροσόλυμα is just a Hellenized form of the word. The problem is that the one in singular and the other is plural. This is not unusual in Greek for even Athens is referred to by the Greeks in plural e.g. Τας Αθήνας , ταις Αθήναις.
