Good afternoon Father, this weekend is my nephews memorial and we were told by our local church that because its a big yiorti this weekend they are unable to do any memorials, then we ask Panayias in wood green and they said yes of course we are doing all memorials despite of the yiorti, why do orthodox churches have different rules
Answer to Question 604 This Sunday is Pentecost and for the church it is the greatest feast after Pascha. In general we do not do memorials on any of the great feasts because they are feasts of great joy which do not allow for any mourning. The Orthodox Churches do not have different rules, but some bend the rules. In this case I can only assume that Panagia of Wood Green is allowing memorials on this feast because people don't know that they shouldn't bring memorials on this day, or they don't want to lose out on the cash benefits. What else can I say? If Fr. Charalambos Georgiou was still with us he could have enlightened us on why they are the only church allowing memorials on Pentecost
