Question 573

Good morning Pater I think we have a problem that you might be a able to help with. I'm a Orthodox, my daughter Protestant, her husband Catholic. They want to christen their little son Orthodox. The Godfather to be is also Orthodox. Is such a christening allowed, or what has to be done? I suppose a thousand different forms to fill up?

Answer to Question 573

I cannot see any problem. Whether a child is received into the Orthodox faith should not depend on what church his parents belong to. I would have no problem baptising your grandson and all I would ask for is a copy of his birth certificate and a copy of the Godparents baptism, NO forms to fill in. But there are priests that insist that the parents must also be Orthodox so it is best to ask the priest at your local church and if he has difficulty in baptising your grandson then go to another church until you find a priest that is willing.

Thank you for the prompt reply Pater. It has confused me a little, as it seems that it will all depend on whether an individual priest will accept it or not, not the actual Orthodox writings.  Going from priest to priest does not sound that our Orthodox religion is united, or in agreement. We‘ll try, anyway.

It is confusing at times. There are guidelines and rules set by each diocese, but many priests don't know what they are and don't bother to find out and just go by what they think is right or wrong.
