Question 570

Which version of the Bible do you encourage your flock to read?  I know the subject has been discussed before but I can’t remember the conclusion  Thank you, God bless you

Answer to Question 570

This is not an easy question because there are so many translations and not one Bible that is 100% a true translation of the original Greek. The best is to read it in Greek, but for most of us this is difficult and even if our Greek is good, the language of the Bible is very hard to understand.

I have to separate the Bible into Old and New Testaments. For the New Testament I much prefer the King James Version. It is a little archaic, but I feel the translation is the closest to the Original Greek. For the Old Testament all the translations are wrong. There are 10 books missing from western bibles and there are a great many differences from the Greek. The Orthodox uses the Septuagint Bible which was translated from the Hebrew into Greek by Jews in 285BC. It is in fact much older than the Hebrew bible used to translate into English which was translated from the Greek back into Hebrew after 70AD. But that is another history lesson. You can obtain Septuagint versions in English from specialized bookshops. There is also the Orthodox Study Bible which was put together especially so that Orthodox can have a more reliable Bible. I don't know if they stock them in England, but you can buy them online
