Question 57.

Hi father, I am baptising my little girl in Cyprus in September, one if the godparents will not be coming to Cyprus. Is it possible to have a 'blessing' in a orthodox church in London when we get home?

Answer to Question 57.

A godparent is someone who represents the child during the service by answering questions put to the child and by reciting the creed of faith. If someone is not present then he cannot be a godparent and there is no blessing that can be said to make him one. If he cannot make it to the baptism maybe he should wait until you have another child. Baptism is a serious matter, let's not reduce it to having two or three godparents just so our child can have more presents.
