Hi Father, how often should we confess and should we arrange this through our local church? Is confession the same thing as just asking to speak to a priest? Thank you.
Answer to Question 553 There is no rule saying how often we should go for confession. Most people confess once or twice a year normally before Easter and Christmas, but there are others that feel they need to confess more regularly like every month. As a rule we should confess whenever our heart is heavy with guilt. Confession can be arranged through your local church, but most people choose a priest they feel comfortable with and who has a reputation as being a good spiritual father. Confession is a sacrament and cannot be given by all priests, but only those that have been given this special privilege by the bishop. On the other hand you can speak with any priest if all you need is advice. I see you are friends with Fathers Joseph Paliouras and Demetrianos Melekis, that is a good place to start.
