Question 541

What are, if any, the implications to the Greek Orthodox Church regarding the recent split of the Ukraine from the Russian Orthodox Church?

Answer to Question 541

This is a very complicated and disturbing issue and something I have not understood fully. There was already an internal schism in the Ukraine, but the Church of Constantinople has created an even bigger schism by accepting the schismatic bishops as canonical. The other Greek churches like Cyprus, Greece, Jerusalem and Alexandria have voiced their concerns but as yet have not taken sides. If they stand behind the Ecumenical Patriarch then they will alienate the Russian Church and if they side with the Russian Church then they will have to openly oppose the decisions of the Ecumenical Patriarch which could lead to an even bigger schism of the Orthodox Churches. Let's pray that the Holy Spirit will enlighten all to find a peaceful and embracing solution.
