Question 522

Morning Father ... my question is this .. I was brought up to believe that if you were taking communion on the Sunday then you must fast the Wednesday and Friday of that week ( as normal ) and also the Saturday... but others have said this is incorrect and that you should never fast any Saturday ( apart from great Saturday and if a special feast falls on that day )

Answer to Question 522

The General guidelines for receiving Communion which most Priests will tell you is that if you keep all the fasts in the Church’s year, that is: every Wednesday and Friday, The Lenten fast, Holy Week, The Apostle’s fast, The August fast, and the Advent fast, and have the blessing of your Spiritual Father, then you can have Communion whenever you want. Saturday is a non fasting day and if the church intended us to fast before Holy Communion then she would have prescribed that Saturdays should also be a fasting day.  But to those that don’t keep the fasts then we tell them to fast a few days beforehand. Not as a punishment, but because we should always come prepared to receive Christ into our hearts and bodies and fasting can help by keeping our mind fixed to this purpose.
