Question 500

The Groom is English  and will be Baptised into the Orthodox faith so that he may Marry in the Orthodox Church. The Best Man is English, he too is happy to be Baptised so that he may be the Best Man. Is this permitted? Neither have actually ever been baptised before into any faith!

Answer to Question 500

Yes, of course it is permitted. His motives might be only so that he can be best man, but he will have to undergo catechism lessons and will only be baptised when the priest believes he is ready. The same can be said of the groom, his motives might only be so that he can be married in church, but he too will have to undergo catechism lessons and will be baptised only and if the priest believes he has understood enough to be a member of the Orthodox church
