Good after Father. I know that the monks of mount Athos, monks and nuns of the Orthodox faith do not eat meat. Why is this?
Answer to Question 468 It is a custom that goes back to the beginning of monasticism that monks do not eat eat. It is purely an ascetical decision and not because they despise meat. The aim and end of the monastic profession is sobriety, virginity and the restraint and suppression of the body, but meat is the richest form of food and helps develop a love of pleasures, which goes against suppressing the bodily desires
