Question 449

Hi, Father, What's the position of the orthodox church regarding extraterrestrial life? A priest once told me that according to Seraphim Rose, it's all demonic. Doesn't the fact that God the Son assumed our nature imply that mankind is the crown of God's creation and that there are no other rational life forms?

Answer to Question 449

I'm not sure if the church has officially taken a position on this subject. I have read Seraphim Rose and yes, he says that it is a demonic delusion, but Seraphim Rose is not the church and it is only his interpretation. The truth is we cannot be sure if there is life somewhere other than on earth. I personally saw strange crafts in the sky which acted like no craft on earth. Whether they were from another planet I do not know, but it certainly wasn't a demonic delusion. There is also the argument that the earth is only a speck in the universe, why then would God create such a vast universe of many galaxies if he only created life on earth. I think it is a question of waiting to see if our own technology can answer this question

A question I often ask... My guess, although I’m probably wrong, is just the way God made many different animals and types of environments on earth, he probably did the same throughout all his creation... Many different worlds with different environments and species of life...

I too have often asked this question and I am comfortable with the "idea" that there are other worlds out there who were also created in God's image, who also fell from God's grace like our Adam and the Son of God became incarnate in their world to save them as he did for us. There are some that interpret John 10:16 as other folds meaning other beings from other planets: And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd

I totally agree Pater... On the other hand, better to concentrate on this world before wandering about others i guess...

Yes of course, I said I was comfortable with the "idea" that doesn't mean that I believe there are other worlds out there, more rather that I remain open minded

But, Father, if we follow the genesis account of creation, it suggests that man is the crown of God's creation who was made last in the image and likeness of God. Even God the Son took on our own nature. If aliens do exist, wouldn't that somehow suggest Man is not that special. It also raises the question are they fallen beings who believe in God?

If you look at my answer to P... you will see that I didn't say I believe in aliens, but that I remain open minded. This is because of what I saw many years ago. Back in 1982 or 83, I had left a friend's house after midnight and was driving home. Our house is off West Green Road near Seven Sister's station. For those of you who know the area I came out of Lawrence Rd into West Green Rd. and just before the bridge I noticed about a dozen cigar shaped UFOs motionless and fairly low in the sky above the High Rd junction (where Tescos is now). I stopped my car and got out to have a better look and while I was watching them one craft suddenly zapped into a different position. It was so unbelievably fast. Then another craft moved and then another. I kept watching them fascinated by how they stood motionless in mid air and then zap here and zap there. My house was just around the corner and I thought I'd go home and get my cine camera then remembered the batteries needed changing. If we had mobiles in those days I could have captured them on video and then called the police. Anyway to cut a long story short, I watched them for about half an hour and then thought go home, I can't be the only person who has seen them and tomorrow it will definitely be on the news. So I went to bed and the next day there was no mention of these strange UFOs. Or course it doesn't mean that they were alien craft, they could have been some secret aircraft invented by the Americans or the British, but even after all these 35 years I have never seen anything invented by man that can stay motionless in the sky without making a sound and then to move position as fast as lighting. By the way I wasn't drunk and didn't imagine it and I don't believe for a moment that I was seeing a demonic delusion.
