Question 446

Morning. If a lesbian couple (who are married by a registrar) want to christen their child in the Greek Orthodox Church...can they? One of the parents is Greek Orthodox the other is catholic. thanks .

Answer to Question 446

Wow, this is going to be difficult. Firstly we do not recognize lesbian marriages or gay marriages. To baptize a child it needs the consent of both biological parents. So if the child is the offspring of a conventional marriage then the father must give his written consent or be at the baptism to verify that he has no objections to his child being baptized. If the child came about by some other way then it depends on who has sole custody of the child. If a father's name is entered on the birth certificate then he must give his consent unless the mother can prove that she has sole custody and the father is not part of the child's life.

Ok that is confusing. So technically if the mother can prove that she has sole custody of the child (the dad was an anonymous donor) then they can christen the child?

I would think so, but it is best to keep quiet about being in a lesbian marriage as some priests would think it a reason to not allow the baptism
