Question 445

Kalimera Father i hope you are well, My question to you is can you please explain this to me in layman's terms  Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge against one of your people, but love your neighbor as yourself. I am the LORD” (Leviticus. 19:18).

Answer to Question 445

Good morning, I would have thought the verse is straightforward, the Lord said something similar in the New Testament when asked what is the greatest commandment in the Jewish Law: Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself. There is no commandment greater than these.(Mark 12: 30-31) In simple terms it means you would not harm yourself so love your neighbour as you love yourself, forgive him for whatever he does to you and don't think of revenging yourself by paying evil with evil. Pray for him as you would pray for yourself and return to him love instead of evil. This is the spiritual law and Christ went one step further by saying: "Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you" (Matthew 5:44)
