Question 419

Why are we not allowed to cross our legs in church? My yiayia always said its not allowed but with no explanation.

Answer to Question 419

We do not only pray with our mouths but also with our heart and with our body so the position of our bodies is important. In older times there were no seats in church except for a few around the edges for the elderly. So the correct posture was to remain standing. When seats were introduced posture was still considered important, crossing ones legs was and is considered as too casual a posture and is disrespectful if you consider that we are standing or sitting before the throne of God. When you’re sitting on your settee at home by all means cross your legs if that helps you to relax, but in church whether standing or sitting always stand to attention before God.
