◄ Back to Table ◄NEXT SUNDAY► 19 SEPTEMBER Sunday after the Exaltation of the Cross
At Mattins The Second Morning Gospel The Reading is from the Holy Gospel according to St. Mark St Mark 16:1-8 When the sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome, had bought sweet spices, that they might come and anoint him. And very early in the morning the first day of the week, they came unto the sepulchre at the rising of the sun. And they said among themselves, Who shall roll us away the stone from the door of the sepulchre? And when they looked, they saw that the stone was rolled away: for it was very great. And entering into the sepulchre, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, clothed in a long white garment; and they were affrighted. And he saith unto them, Be not affrighted: Ye seek Jesus of Nazareth, which was crucified: he is risen; he is not here: behold the place where they laid him. But go your way, tell his disciples and Peter that he goeth before you into Galilee: there shall ye see him, as he said unto you. And they went out quickly, and fled from the sepulchre; for they trembled and were amazed: neither said they any thing to any man; for they were afraid.
At the Divine Liturgy The Apostle Reading (Sunday after the Exaltation) Prokhimenon. Tone 6. [Psalm 27]. Verse: Save, O Lord, Thy people, and bless Thine inheritance: Verse: Unto thee will I cry, O Lord, my God.
The
reading is from the Epistle of St. Paul to the Galatians. Brethren, knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified. But if, while we seek to be justified by Christ, we ourselves also are found sinners, is therefore Christ the minister of sin? God forbid. For if I build again the things which I destroyed, I make myself a transgressor. For I through the law am dead to the law, that I might live unto God. I am crucified with Christ: neverthless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me. Alleluia [3]. Tone 6 [Psalm 90]. Verse: He that dwelleth in the help of the most High shall abide under the shelter of the God of heaven. Verse: He shall say unto the Lord, Thou art my helper.
The Gospel Reading (Sunday after the Exaltation) The Reading is from the Holy Gospel according to St. Mark St Mark 8:34-9:1 The Lord said: Whosoever will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. For whosoever will save his life shall lose it; but whosoever shall lose his life for my sake and the gospel's, the same shall save it. For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul? Whosoever therefore shall be ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation; of him also shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he cometh in the glory of his Father with the holy angels. And he said unto them, Verily I say unto you, That there be some of them that stand here, which shall not taste of death, till they have seen the kingdom of God come with power.
